A History of the Curriculum Council of University Park School
for the Year 2959—2960.
{Compiled for the records March 16, i960, by Lila P. Clinton,
Secretary, )
The Council is composed of Jean Redeker, Chairman; Miss
Lackemann, Principal; and one mother from each of the class
rooms.
The main purpose of the Council is for parent education.
It serves as a liaison group between the school and the home.
Our first meeting of the year was held October 28g 1959. We
met every month thereafter, and it is our intention to have
meetings in April and May.
Most of the meetings consisted of general discussions
by the group. Tlie topics wiere selected by the group. Th.e
ones selected were the ones which interested the majority of
the mothers, regardless of the grades their own children
we re i n.
Safety for the children in relationship to traffic was
thoroughly discussed. University Park does not have the
student patrol system. The pros and cons of this were discussed. The main concern to the parents is "the parents
themselves". By this we mean that it is our driving habits
on snowy days, double parking, etc., which are responsible
for the terrible congestion, in front of the school when
school lets out.
Some mothers seemed to feel that having a store so
close to the school created a problem since so many youngsters visited the store often and. spent money freely. The
general consensus of opinion was that the school should
not interfere but should send out a general viaming to all
parents and let them control and advise their individual
children.
Parent-teacher conferences were discussed briefly.
I think everyone decided that this was necessary for some
children and, should be instigated by either the parent or
the teacher.
Sex education for the sixth graders was a topic discussed. It was decided to show separate films to the sixth
grade boys and girls at a later date and to have the parents
review the films at a separate showing. These films are to
be presented by someone from the Central Office.
At one of the meetings Miss Lackemann presented a very
interesting speech on reporting grades and grouping methods.
The basis for report cards are daily work, tests, {both
teacher made and standardized) the relationship of attitude
and work habits, social characteristics, and teacher judgment.
