The accident occurred on Main Street, near the postoffice [sic], when the aged man is said to have stepped into the path of the machine. Butler suffered a fractured skull and numerous cuts and bruises. Little hope is held for his recovery. The aged pioneer had been commander of the Longmont post of the Grand Army of the Republic for sixteen years, and had been mentioned as a candidate for national commander. He attended the recent national G.A.R. convention in Denver. During the Civil War he served with the Fourth Wisconsin Cavalry. He has been well known in Colorado since he came here in the gold rush days of 1859. he returned to Wisconsin at the outbreak of the war, and came back to Colorado in 1866."; Condition: sections torn from edges; penciled "X" and arrow on photoprint.; Title from newspaper clipping glued to verso; also reads: "Of course the steady waves of applause from the multitudes fringing the line of march in the big parade, Wednesday, broke into roars as the boys in blue from Colorado and Wyoming passed. Pictured here, left to right, are C. Ricketts, commander of the department of Colorado and Wyoming; William Butler, J. E. Laycock, Robert McElhose and Tobias Mattox, past commanders."; R7110030024
