Summary	View of the Gilpin County Court House and the exteriors of St. James' Methodist Church on Eureka Street behind a row of houses. Behind these landmarks are the buildings along West Main Street and the hills that surround the town. Until the court house was built, much of Central City's business was conducted in Washington Hall on Lawrence Street. In 1897, voters authorized a bond issue for $30,000 to build the building, and the building was completed in 1900. The brick building was modeled after the Otero County Court House in LaJunta and had foundation walls two- to-three feet thick. The St. James congregation was organized in 1859, shortly after the founding of the town.
