houses
.
Behind
these
landmarks
are the
buildings
along
West
Main
Street
and the
hills
that
surround
the
town
.
Until
the
court
house
was
built
,
much
of
Central
City's
business
was
conducted
in
Washington
Hall
on
Lawrence
Street
. In
1897
,
voters
authorized
a
bond
issue
for
$30,000
to
build
the
building
, and the
building
was
completed
in
1900
. The
brick
building
was
modeled
after
the
Otero
County
Court
House
in
LaJunta
and had
foundation
walls
two-
to-three
feet
thick
. The
St
.
James
congregation
was
organized
in
1859
,
shortly
after
the
founding
of the
town
.
