An Ames Iron Works machine stands in the foreground in the interior of a large building, probably the mechanical engineering building, on the campus of Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. Additional work tables are spread throughout the long room. The steel beams supporting the roof of the brick building are exposed. Stanford University was founded in 1885 by Leland and Jane Stanford. Many buildings on the campus were heavily damaged in the "great earthquake" ; of April, 1906.
