A group of school children stands in front of the schoolhouse in Caribou, a mining town in Boulder County, Colorado, near the end of the 19th century during the area's mining heyday. Several women, probably schoolteachers, stand on the front porch of the school. Long log poles support the school building to protect it against strong winds. An article in the June 28, 1878 "Rocky Mountain News" describes the school as: "a building moderate in its pretentions but ; comfortable and fitted with new and improved bent wood furniture. The walls are adorned with black boards, maps, globes and everything necessary for the instruction of the young. Miss Isabel Backus is the teacher in charge, a lady of superior talents as an instructor and a great favorite among her pupils." Several other buildings are in the right midground. A large building, possibly a mill, is in the left background.
