View of the Hayden Survey encampment (U.S. Geological Survey of the Territories, 1871) on a grassy plain at the base of Emigrant Peak, an ancient caldera near the east bank of the Yellowstone River in Park County, Montana. Shows canvas tents and covered wagons set up in a circle. Trees grow along the banks of the Yellowstone River, and the Wasatch Mountains are in the distance.
