with
spectators
outside
of

.

sedans
are
parked
in the

reads
:
Coca
Cola
.

Scene
of the
great
rattlesnake
derby
, a
feature
of the
local
color
stuff
provided
by
Trinidad
for the
entertainment
of its
visitors
from the
south
. The
Junior
Chamber
of
Commerce
was
responsible
for this
stunt
. A
dozen
full
sized
and
full-
equipped
rattlesnakes
gathered
in from the
nearby
prairies
were
dumped
out
in the
middle
of the
enclosure
. An
electric
current
starts
them on their
way
toward
the
outer
fence
. The
snake
which
first
pokes
his
head
thru
the
fence
is
declared
the
winner
, and as
all
the
openings
between
the
stakes
in the
fence
are
numbered
, the
person
holding
the
winning
number
gets
a
prize
of
$250.00
.
Although
they
start
moving
at a
lively
pace
, with their
rattles
going
full
blast
when
stung
by the
electricity
, the
snakes
calm
down
within
a
few
feet
and
scarcely
move
at
all
from then on.
Within
10
or
15
minutes
some
snake
with a
yen
to
travel
will
reach
the
fence
, and
often
the
finish
is
very
close
. A
snake
may
come
right
up
to the
fence
and
decide
to
parallel
it
for a
while
,
giving
the
fans
heart
failure
as they
cheer
him on or
beseech
him to
stop
at the "
wicket
"
whose
number
they
hold
. A
corrugated
iron
wall
about
two
feet
high
keeps
the
spectators
and the
snakes
apart
. The
ball
club
which
uses
this
park
for
soft
ball
games
got
a
court
order
to
prevent
loosing
the
snakes
there,
fearing
some
might
get
lost
and
become
a
pest
. But that was
just
a
publicity
stunt
and the
rattlesnake
derby
went
off
night
after
night
, as
scheduled.
