View of a carved memorial for Conrad Moschel on the face of a rock in Castlewood Canyon near Castlewood Canyon State Park, Douglas County, Colorado. Small trees and shrubs cover other words carved into the stone, and there is a small, white obelisk marker at the bottom of the rock face. The letters carved into the rock read: "Conrad Moschel Pioneer Massacred by Indians August 21, 1864." The obelisk reads: "In Remembrance of Our Father Conrad Moschel Killed by Indians Aug. 21, 1864 Aged 30 Years." "While in the world we yet remain we only meet to part again, When we reach Heaven's shore we then meet to part no more. In remembrance of our father Conrad Moschel."

Title and content derived from inventory prepared by Kathleen Barlow.; From inventory: "He had been shot in the back with an arrow, a gunshot wound to the head and had been scalped. He was buried where he was found and a carved memorial is in the rock cliff above the grave. A granite tombstone was later added to the head of the grave." This among other killings is what prompted Colonel Chivington's massacre of Indians at Sand Creek in 1864.; Scanned image from loaned collection.; Digitization sponsored by the Kenneth King Foundation.
