He died April 20, 1983 in Trinidad, Colorado. Herman worked on a ranch in Gulnare, Colorado, homesteaded by his Grandfather José de la Cruz Paiz. When José returned to New Mexico, he left the ranch to his sons, Juan de Jesús Paiz, Ausencio Paiz and Daniel Paiz. Herman's mother Anastacia Gonzales Paiz bought Daniel and Ausencio's land. Herman never married, and stayed at the ranch to take care of his mother.
