HISPAN© CULTURAL COMPLEX
The Hispano is Denver's and Colorado's largest
minority group. By all statistical standards it, as a group,
is an economically deprived group, has received and is receiving substandard education, is housed in inadequate
housing, is greatly underemployed and in many instances left
unemployed, requires the greatest amount of welfare and
assistance, and in general suffers not only from much of
the discrimination which the Negro is well aware of, but in
addition, suffers because of different cultural backgrounds
and values. At the same time the Hispano culture is one,
which for the most part, the anglo culture has turned its
nose down on and berated, rather than praising and respecting
it and appreciating the beauty and strength of that culture
which it has.
The metropolitian area of Denver is rapidly
growing and as part of that growth there is a major movement
towards rehabilitation and improvement of the core area.
Denver and Colorado have long been known for their tourist
attractions. The ski industry in the winter has certainly
added to this significant tourism industry. The completion
of the Denver Convention Center offers additional opportunities
for increased tourism. With additional incentives the tourism
business in Denver and in Colorado could be expanded
significantly over its even now high level of growth.
Metro State College is a newly formed institution
of higher learning created by the State Legislature. Its
projected and expected growth is quite large. It has some
unique features about it as an educational institution. One
of the avenues it is exploring now is the possibility of an
expanded educational effort in the area of Hispano culture
and education, not only for the Hispano student, but for
the culture as well.
