Welcome to the People's Fair!
The tenth annual Capitol Hill
People's Fair marks a significant achievement as one of the
most successful urban fairs
anywhere in the country. Begun
in 1971 as a way of informing
Capitol Hill residents about
various social services in their
neighborhood, the People's Fair
has grown over the years into a
citywide and regional celebration of springtime and a
celebration of urban life.
The Fair organizers like to
think of the event as one large
open-air party put on by and for
the people of Capitol Hill and
their friends. But the People's
Fair is much more. This year
there are over 475 exhibitors in
such areas as handcrafts, social
services, holistic health and environmental technology. There
are special areas within the Fair.
Don't forget the food booths!
Then there is live entertainment from three separate
stages, the beer garden, and
the unpredictable People's Fair
Parade down Colfax at noon on
Sunday. But most important is
the traditional magic of the People's Fair, folks forgetting their
worldly differences and joining
together in the spirit of celebration. So let yourself go and
have fun! Welcome to the People's Fair!
This Guide will help you find
booths, entertainment and
special areas . .. and it will let
you know when entertainers
and special events are
scheduled. Keep it with you at
the Fair, and take it home as a
souvenir of the 1981 Tenth Annual Capitol Hill People's Fair.

Guide
Environmental Technology Area
One of the most important features of this year's People's Fair is a centrally located and
consumer oriented Environmental Technology Area.
This year, there will be 3 types of booths in the area. For the first time, the Environmental
Technology Committee will provide a staffed information booth to organizations wishing their
literature displayed.
The Fair will have representatives from environmental groups and others whose booths will
feature information, bumper stickers and T-shirts. Lastly, the Environmental Area will feature
displays and equipment from various companies who specialize in alternative energy uses
and energy conservation, which Fair visitors can examine at their leisure.
With these 3 types of booths, the Environmental Technology Area will have something for
everyone!
Renaissance
Again this year the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc., will participate in the People's
Fair. The South Lawn and South Courtyard of East High School will be the Renaissance area.
There will be demonstrations of rattan fighting (swords and shields, with the fighters in
helms and armor); rapier fighting (fencing); Olympic-style fencing; and dancing on the green.
There will also be deomonstrations of various arts and crafts such as calligraphy,
embroidery, and jewelry; exhibits on display; and some handcrafts for sale. The costumes displayed (on the SCA members) will be from various areas of the world and various periods of
time prior to 1650.
Information and flyers on the Society will be available for those wishing to learn more about
the group, and all members will be happy to answer questions whenever they're not totally absorbed in something else (like watching their favorite fighter on the field).
Children's Area
A Fair within the Fair, for children on all ages. Once you have entered this Fair, you may
forget what is going on outside or in the big Fair.
The Children's Fair has so much to offer such as games, face painting and dress-up. For
those animal lovers, see and feel at the petting zoo. If you prefer to be etertained you can
watch and delight in the magic and puppet shows.
If your interest is in construction, build a kite or create a motor car unlike any in the streets
of Denver.
The Information Booth
Visitors will find the Information Booth located on the Esplanade in front of the 16th Avenue
entrance to East High School.
Official People's Fair T-shirts and posters will be on sale at the booth. T-shirts are only $6
for all sizes and posters are $3 unsigned and $6 signed by the artist, John Cuneo. "Life is
Great on Capitol Hill" T-shirts will also be available at this booth.
Beneath the colorful Tee-Pee, volunteers will provide general information about the Fair,
lost children and parents, restrooms, etc.
CHUN as well as several other community service groups will also be represented.
