Liquor Licenses Major CHUN Concern
DIRTY DOZEN NAMED
The Board of Delegates of Capitol Hill
United Neighborhoods has authorized CHUN
participation in a series of efforts to
rid Capitol Hill of its overabundance of
sleazy bars.
The Board sees the bars as a major contributor to crime in the Capitol Hill area.
They act as focal points f<br drug dealers,
prostitutes/ fencers of stolen goods, and
other c^iitiinal elements.
They breed fear among local residents who
are often afraid to leave their apartments.
They spawn noise, filth, and violence.
Sometimes they even trigger death. One such
bar, the Malfunction Junction, was closed
down last spring after two persons were
shot to death in front of the bar.
The Board isn't waiting for someone else
to be killed before the other bars can be
shut down.
The time for action is now. The Board has
ordered full speed ahead on a variety of
fronts to restore a feeling of security to
the residents of Capitol Hill.
THE DIRTY DOZEN
Itecognizing that Capitol Hill is not the
only area in Denver with problem bars,
CHUN is actively working with InterNeigh-
borhood Cooperation (INC) on its "Dirty
Dozen" campaign.
The campaign was announced at a well-
attended press conference called by
INC September 12. CHUN Board itember and
INC delegate Bernie Janes told the assembled members of the press that INC was
seeking public input into a contest to
name the twelve worst bars in Denver —
already nicknamed "the Dirty Dozen."
Once the bars are selected, Jones said,
public pressure will be brought to bear
to either bring the bars into ocrapliance
with the law or close them down.
Already nominated for inclusion in the
exclusive list are the Bar Maid, Cousin
Charlie's, the Colony, the University Inn,
the New Yorker, and the House of Draught.
Persons with other natiinations can call the
CHUN office at 388-2716.
HOUSE OF DRAUGHT
Unsinkable Neighbors (Area Four) has been
heard at work on one of the worst bars in
Capitol Hill, the House of Draught at 500
East Thirteenth Avenue. New, in a virtually
unprecedented action, the State Department
of Revenue has agreed to hold public hearings on whether that bar's liquor license
should be renewed.
The hearings are scheduled for Wednesday,
October 7, at 9:00 a.m., and Friday, October 9, at 9:00 a.m. They will be held in
the fourth floor hearing rocm at 1375 Sherman Street.
The Board is asking all CHUN m&__mbers to help
out in this major fight by attending the
hearing. There needs to be a strong showing
of public support and concern.
