Denver s District Attorney Discusses
Area Crime With CHUN Board
Dale Tooley, Denver's District Attorney,
long time resident of Capitol Hill and CHUN
member, spoke to the CHUN board of delegates at its last meeting.
He had requested to address the board about
the problem of crime in Capitol Hill, and
to suggest what could be done to help eliminate it.
Tooley reported that he had specifically
asked the police department's vice and
narcotics unit to keep pressure on the
Colony Lounge at 569 East Coifax,which he
feels is a problem.  "That is a difficult
block," he explained, and "we intend to
keep our attention on the place." He also
said that another problem bar he intended
to watch was the Barmaid.
Changes can occur in an establishment,
Tooley explained, and he mentioned the
successes in closing Malfunction Junction
and the Pearl Street Complex.  As for the
House of Draught, the manager recently told
him that if the place were any cleaner "it
would be a church.*" Tooley explained he
did not share this view, and was still "trying to slow the place down."
He said that the best way he has found to
improve a business is to get the management involved.
Tooley then explained a theory of his based
on his experience as the city's top prosecutor as to why there is a seeming increase
of violent crime in the city.  In the past
few months he has seen the largest influx
of Klan, Na^i, and anti-semetic materials
that he has encountered in several years.
He believes that these items^ "probably
protected by the first amendment," contribute to a violent climate.  "Most of the
material has been distributed in east and
southeast Denver," he stated, "but it is
undoubtedly passed around."
He requested that if anyone sees this type
of literature that they call his office
(575-5176 — ask for Lu Ann Richey).  He
also requested that if anyone hears of
potential criminal activity or observes
those who appear to be mentally ill and
potentially dangerous, that his office be
called.

Community Center to the first floor.  Our
new office will be easier to find and
sunnier.

carrying some boxes and arranging chairs,
drinks and snacks will be provided.
