CAPITOL HILL UNITED NEIGHBORHOODS INC. P.O. BOX 18575 DENVER, COLO. 80206
NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 1973
Welcome back from summer for a busy year with CHUN I
SIGN CODE:
CIIUN is pleased that the Eller Co„ amendments to weaken the Denver
sign code were recently defeated by city Council. CHUM PresidentMike
Henry sent a letter to Councilman Koch and other members of council,
urging that they nnot be persuaded, that the monetary interests of a few
outweigh the visual beauty of Denver belonging to all of us." City council
is to be commended for its strong action in this matter.
ZONING NEWS;
Jim James, our ever-vigilant and hard-working zoning committee chairman, has recently submitted to the Denver zoning Department a proposed
language amendment to the zoning ordinance, requesting that commercial
parking as a use by right in R-3 (high-density) zoned, areas be eliminated.
Jim states? "The intrusion of parking into R-3 primarily serves nearby
commercially-zoned areas, is an intrusion of commercial use into what is
intended only as a high-density residential area, and leads to the subsequent erosion of viable neighborhoods. This is occuring particularly
in the near-downtovm areas, and should be halted before the effects become
irreversibleo" CHUN hopes that this significant proposal is given prompt
attention by the zoning Department.
LETTERS TO CHUN PRESIDENT;
Mike Henry, following his election as CHUN President in April, has
received congratulatory letters from many people, including Mayor Mc-
Nichols and congresswoman schroeder.
BEETLES;
Trees for Today and Tomorrow (TTT) has urged that homeowners and
landlords remove and proper3.y dispose of, diseased and dying elms by
Sept. 1.5th at the latest. The fall hatch of the beetles spreading Dutch
elm disease will infect the remaining healthy elms, and "the devastation
next summer could turn Denver into a prairie again," warns TTT»

BEAT THE HIGH COST OF EATING;
These days, food co-ops are being activated all over the country.
Denver has one - The Common Market Food co-op. It carries non-food items,
fresh fruits and produce, dairy, canned goods, fresh grains, frozen foods,
breads (oatmeal currant, wheatberry, sunflower - DELICIOUS I), spices,
meat, poultry, fish, etc. savings average 1$% to 20$, and more on many
items. The store isn't fancy - it's now located in the Auraria urban
Renewal Area - but the food is fresh, good, and fairly cheap.
