CHUN BOARD OF DELEGATES MEETING
Capitol Hill Community Center
April 10, 1980
The meeting was called to order by President Dan Paulien at 7:4-0 pm. In attendance
were Delegates Lynn Adams, Pauline Bryans, Jo Campbell, Dene Clark, Patsy Frannea,
Bob Fuller, Scott Hardy, Mike Henry, John Hitch, Marcia Hughes, Bill Johnson, Bernie
Jones, Tobi Kanter, Sally Kurtzman, Janet Moore-Kirkland, Leon Sanders, Joyce Thorn,
Charlie Trainor, and Sandy Weston. Also present were Delegates-elect Elizabeth
Bobrovolny and Elizabeth Singer. Others in attendance included staff members Nancy
Rettig and dock McNulty; Leslie France, Kirsten Hartman, Barbara and Howard Holme.
The minutes of the March Board meeting were approved without corrections.
Ethlyn Christensen gave an update on the purchase of old Emerson School by the Capitol Hill senior's organization and its certificate of need (both actions previously supported by CHUN), and asked CHUN's support at a public hearing later in the
month at which the need for a Capitol Hill health station (for all ages) is to be
determined. Expressions of support were voiced by several persons.
The Treasurer's report was given by Dene Clark, who reported an April 7, 1980
bank account balance of $1258.99 after expenditures of $34-60.60 and revenues of
$2226.53 during the last quarter.
Dan Paulien announced that Delegate Ken Freed had resigned from the Board; since
the new Board is to be seated in May, no move was made to fill this vacancy.
CHUN Office staff person Jock McNulty announced his resignation effective mid-
May. Jock will be taking another position in light of his recently expanded
family responsibilities (Congratulations Jock and Ann on the arrival of your
daughter). Dan made a statement of appreciation for Jock's services.
Leslie France, Chairperson, reported the work of her nominating committee. The
committee nominated 11 persons at large, six persons as Neighborhood Assembly Delegates in areas 1, 3, and 9 where assemblies didn't produce nominations. Marcia
Hughes moved approval of this list, leaving to the discretion of the President and
the committee to add names in other yet-unfilled categories as needed . The motion
passed unanimously.
Nancy Rettig, People's Fair Coordinator, reported that the finances of the fair are
looking good, as applications for booths had been coming in at a good clip. A decision was made that some PF funds should be put into interest-bearing accounts
for a few months til expenditures come due later.
The food booth that CHUN will have was discussed by committee convener Sandy Weston. Coca-Cola was donated supplies, and hot dogs and buns are being lined up.
A sign-up list for persons to staff the booth was circulated.
Sandy then reported on the April 24- Annual Meeting, which is to be held at Botanic
Gardens. The focus was to be Downtown: Good Neighbor or Nemesis? After discussion
about the (outrageous) $200 fee being charged to us, Marcia Hughes moved we go
ahead and use the Botanic Gardens. The motion passed 12-7-1. Sandy was thanked
for her work in orchestrating the meeting.
Dan Padlien and Janet Moore-Kirkland led a discussion about the filling of the
CHUN staff position. It was noted that we need two kinds of work done, administration and community development (volunteer coordination and resource development),
and that an ad hoc committee had begun thinking about the issue. That committee
is to meet again on May 29, and will work with the People's Fair Committee to see
how that work can be woven into the picture. The thinking of the committee was
that close to a full-time year-round staffer is needed, and that would require a
rethinking of our budget and ways of generating income. For the time being, it
was moved by Mike Henry that we fill the existing office position on an interim
